AJ FLOOR LAMP - A TIMELESS LIGHTING CHOICE
Take a journey back to the 1960s. The Beach Boys were on the gramophone, the Flower Power movement was booming and Martin Luther King's famous words "I have a dream" echoed through the USA. And in our own little country, the world's first design hotel was built right in the centre of Copenhagen. That very design hotel was the birthplace of some of Arne Jacobsen's most popular and iconic furniture and lamps. And lamps are exactly what this article is going to be about. More specifically, the AJ Floor Lamp.
Arne Jacobsen revolutionises Danish design
Arne Jacobsen was born in 1902, and trained as an architect in 1924. However, the young Jakobsen was bursting with creativity, so after graduating, he started a new programme at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1927. Arne Jacobsen's thinking was innovative and deeply influenced by his architectural background, and he quickly became one of the young hopefuls at the school. The year after graduating, he won a design award for a project for the National Museum and the stage was set for a promising design career.
In the years around the 1930s, Arne Jacobsen really put his name on the map and the whole new style, International Functionalism, was born with Arne Jacobsen at the forefront. In the years to come, Arne Jacobsen designed countless houses in Denmark and abroad, all with the same simple, functionalist and modern expression. Rødovre Town Hall, the National Bank of Denmark and Aarhus City Hall are all icons designed by Arne Jacobsen.
During the 50s, Arne Jacobsen also turned his hand to furniture design, with the same architectural idiom as his buildings. The design icon "Ant" was the first chair to see the light of day, and it is still an insanely popular chair around the world today.

The world's first design hotel
This brings us to 1 July 1960, the year a very special building in the capital was finally completed and Denmark's first skyscraper was a reality. An iconic landmark in the Copenhagen skyline, the SAS Royal Hotel is now complete.
SAS Royal Hotel was designed by Arne Jacobsen as the first design hotel in the world. The hotel would make Denmark popular in a tourist context and become an attractive destination for American tourists, whose new flight routes made it easier to get to the Nordic countries.
Everything in the hotel was imbued with Arne Jacobsen's eye for modern and elegant design! The iconic chairs, the Swan and the Egg, were designed specifically for the hotel's foyer and were intended as a soft counterpart to the angular architecture of the building. The consistent style was carried out to the fullest and even cutlery, bedside tables, curtains and wallpaper were Arne Jacobsen designs.
A design icon is born
Part of the design concept was of course also the lighting in the hotel. Designed in 1957 as a picturesque and sculptural part of the interior design of the SAS Royal Hotel, the AJ lamps were something completely new in the world of lighting with their design language and elegant architectural expression. The AJ Lamp was subsequently produced in collaboration with Louis Poulsen.
The AJ Floor Lamp, or as some would call it - the AJ Floor Lamp - was one of these iconic lamps!
Today, AJ lamps are among the most popular lamps as the timeless design fits into any home. Whether you're into the\ Nordic and minimalist look, or if you're into colour and the "more is more" principle, an AJ lamp is guaranteed to fit perfectly in your home.
